French ambassador recalled from Kyiv over comments on Tymoshenko trialToday at 17:44 | Interfax-Ukraine
French ambassador to Ukraine Jacques Faure will be leaving his post soon and an application for the acceptance of his successor has already been sent to Kyiv, a source in the diplomatic corps in Kyiv told Interfax.Among the possible reasons behind this decision, diplomatic sources have named the dissatisfaction of Paris with the fact that Faure recently made public comments on the trial of former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko that were disappointing to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.
"Traditionally, the ambassadors of France that have also witnessed a series of widely-reported trials of former high-ranking officials have avoided making statements that could be regarded as interference in internal affairs. The demonstrative balance on issues that do not directly damage the national interests of France is the classical line of French diplomacy. Apparently, Jacques Faure crossed the line of what is regarded as acceptable in Paris," the source said.
The source added that the ambassador himself was shocked when the undiplomatic comments that he had made at a closed expert event were widely reported by the press service of the Batkivschyna party doing a disservice to him.
Earlier reports quoted Faure as saying that Tymoshenko's gas trial was political.
"I did not want to comment on the trial, but I want to say that one is getting the impression in France that unfortunately the trial of Yulia Tymoshenko is very far from justice, but very close to politics," the Batkivschyna press service quoted him as saying.
