Российская власть официально признала нежелание Украины интегрироваться в Таможенный союз и уже пригрозила сворачиванием ряда российско-украинских проектов и применением санкций к украинскому экспорту. Эксперты отмечают, что публичный отказ Украины от восточного вектора интеграции упростит переговоры о создании зоны свободной торговли с ЕС.

Консультации правительств Украины и России относительно интеграции Украины в Таможенный союз (ТС) не убедили Киев в необходимости поддержки этого вектора развития. "К сожалению, мы приходим к пониманию, что Украину участие в Таможенном союзе и Едином экономическом пространстве не привлекает. Мы с уважением относимся к такой позиции и будем выстраивать линию наших отношений с украинскими партнерами исходя из нее",– заявил в пятницу в Ялте первый вице-премьер РФ Игорь Шувалов. Свой вывод он пояснил тем, что украинские граждане воспринимают ТС как альтернативу Евросоюзу: "Мы видим, что не все наши аргументы воспринимаются, и общественность Украины по-прежнему больше ориентирована в сторону европейской интеграции".

Putin touts Moscow-led customs union in Ukraine

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin expressed nostalgia for Soviet times on Tuesday in urging Ukraine to join Russia's new customs union with Kazakhstan and Belarus.
Ukraine has resisted pressure to join the Moscow-led union, preferring instead to pursue a free-trade agreement with the European Union.
During a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart, Putin said the customs union would stimulate growth in whole sectors of the Ukrainian economy as he touted the benefits of the economic integration formed when the countries were all part of the Soviet Union.
"The technological links from the Soviet period are still functioning, and one partner cannot be efficient without another," Putin said. "That is what we must think about and give a second wind to the capabilities formed during the previous decades."

The implementation of the Eastern Partnership program will enable its participants to not only bring their countries closer to the European Union, but at some point apply for EU membership, European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy Stefan Fule has said.

In an interview with the Euractiv Web site, the European Commissioner said that the Eastern Partnership was aimed at introducing European standards in the countries taking part in the initiative.

EUOBSERVER / COMMENT - The Ukrainian leadership is trying to demonstrate its democratic face. This could be the consequence of criticism towards President Viktor Yanukovych, which is of late constantly being expressed by Western governments. The Ukrainian authorities are throwing the best of the best at succeeding in finishing negotiations on the Free Trade Area. This year could be crucial for future relations between the EU and Ukraine, and as such for the future of the whole of Europe.

However, President Yanukovych and his team made too many mistakes last year to regain the trust of their foreign partners with the help of a few decisions of this kind. So it would not be a big surprise if the European Union does not yet believe that Ukrainian authorities have cured themselves of the authoritarian syndrome.
