How Russians Weaponize Tornadoes Against US

By Irina Severin |  Climate U-Turn

A deadly tornado on March 6, 2026, in Michigan showed some strange patterns, as noted by meteorologists, that lend credence to the impression of artificial meddling in the process. A single, powerful "lone" supercell thunderstorm tracked across southern Michigan, spawning at least four tornadoes. This event was notable for being the deadliest tornado day in Michigan since 1980 and producing the earliest EF3 tornado on record for the state.

Even more concerning is that there will be more tornadoes, which will be even more damaging. In January, I wrote an analytical article that shows how Russians weaponize the weather against the US. I explored two main topics: how Russians artificially heat the oceans and the Gulf of Mexico to weaponize hurricanes, storms, tornadoes, and flooding against the US, and how Russia weaponizes the polar vortex by artificially disrupting it. In this article, I explain what military-technical means the Russians use to weaponize tornadoes, thunderstorms, and other natural disasters, drawing on inventions from the USSR era.

Soviet Thunder and Lightning Bolt-Producing Generator

An example of a Soviet-era geophysical weapon is an abandoned apparatus in the forests of the Moscow Region - the largest high-voltage generators in the USSR for producing lightning bolts. It could produce a voltage comparable to that of one second of electricity production from all Soviet power stations combined. This "test stand" was built in 1968, with the primary purpose of testing the durability of aircraft and electrical equipment against lightning and thunderstorm attacks.

A Soviet classified object known as Test stands of the High Voltage Research Center of the All-Russia Electrotechnical Institute.

The device consists of three giant transformer cascades, a platform, and a support facility. The tallest tower is its most powerful generator, capable of producing electric discharges of 9 million volts. Such a voltage can be found in natural lightning. Soviet scientists at the All-Russia Electrotechnical Institute produced a 150-meter-long discharge using this generator.

Russia Threatens NATO with Unspecified "Military-Technical" Means

Political-military Analysis Based on OSINT and Reverse Engineering Approach

As Russia's aggression against Ukraine continues, there is a question that still hasn't been answered - what makes Russia so confident in confrontation with the West, which has not happened since Soviet times?

Why would Putin, in December 2021, issue an ultimatum to NATO to withdraw to its pre-1997 positions, threatening unspecified "military-technical measures" if NATO refused? Later, the NYT reported that on the sidelines of negotiations with the West on the ultimatum, Putin's aides suggested that the "results of the military-technical response would be felt acutely in Europe and the United States."

Later, in 2022, Lavrov downplayed Putin's statement in his typical absurdist-dismissive manner to offset the bewilderment, suggesting that "military-technical measures" meant nothing more than the "deployment of military hardware."

However, in March 2023, Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev doubled down on Putin's vague threat by declaring in the famous interview that Russia possesses "unique weapons able to destroy any country, including the US."

In 2024, Ryabkov stated that Russia has "all large-scale military-technical means necessary to reason with the West," alluding to Russia's comparative advantage in its secret "unique and without analogs weapons."
