Russia's Intentional Global Warming Strategy as Geopolitical Weapon

Why, since 2015, has the decades-long pause in global warming suddenly turned into massive intensification? The response to the question explains how tightly politics and climate are linked. After the annexation of Crimea by Russia, the West introduced sanctions against Russia, which led to the loss of Western investments and high technologies in oil production and overall reorientation to #China.

To access oil resources without sophisticated Western technologies, the Russians found the easiest way to reach inaccessible deposits was to destroy the Arctic ice.

Reorientation to China also led to the development of the North Sea Route (#NSR), achieved through aggressive investments in melting and breaking Arctic ice, which in turn intensified global warming.

After the Western investors' exodus, the only way to attract Chinese investments was to prove to the Chinese that the abstract "global warming" leads to an ice-free Arctic.

Since then, all activities in the Arctic (except, probably, the Russian military, which began Arctic icebreaking efforts in 2012 when Shoigu became the Defense Minister) have been subordinated to Rosatom, the agency responsible for nuclear developments, the nuclear icebreaker fleet, and the North Sea route as such. This shows that the artificial climate change in the Arctic became the main goal.

But what happens in the Arctic doesn’t stay in the Arctic. Not only do white bears suffer from the artificial melting of the Arctic, as most sources cite as a priority. The Arctic climate defines the global climate.

By intensely warming the Arctic using all the technologies accessible to the Russians, Moscow distorted the global climate. This explains why the Arctic is warming up 4-7 times quicker than the rest of the world. The Arctic, artificially melted by Russia, is the primary driver of global warming, leading to disastrous consequences for humanity while benefiting Russia.

Since 2020 Russia added to the icebreaking fleet the floating nuclear power station which since then worked for one purpose - destroying the ice and warming up the Arctic to ice free, especially along the North Sea Route, to make the Chinese invest in the Russian North, which is a pure deception strategy as Putin makes #Xi believe that the #Arctic is warming and melting in a natural way and that the #Chinese #investment will be sustainable.

Therefore, investments in ice-melting and ice-breaking in the Arctic are accelerating and will continue to do so, as Putin sees the Arctic as the main driver of the Russian economy. Russian aggressive climate reshaping happens at the expense of the rest of the countries, including China, turning their lands into unlivable territories.

All the Russian destructive activity is covered up by the mantra about CO2 as the only driver of climate change, which lets Russians not only hide their intentions but position themselves as victims of the US’s CO2 emissions.

One of Putin’s main goals now is to lure Trump and the US into joint investment projects in the Arctic, which should shift Russia’s responsibility for global climate destruction to the US, while at the same time using the US resources to further intensify the destruction of the Arctic's fragile climate, which leads to the destruction of the US climate.

Both #Trump and #Xi should wake up to Putin's deception and understand that their nations already pay too high a price -incompatible with survival - for Russian destruction of the Arctic and global climate, and avoid blindly facilitating this destruction.
