One of the most "mysterious" weather features that has lately attracted attention of meteorologists and propaganda is the so-called cold blob in the North Atlantic, which, on the backdrop of global ocean warming, is cooling.
The cold blob resulted from the Russians' efforts to melt the Arctic ice, which intensified in 2014. However, because of its significant influence on the weather setup, the cold blob itself is a target for manipulation.
As ocean water is much more inert than air masses, it is interesting to see how the cold blob is changing. In addition to blocking the Gulf Stream and AMOC from moving deeper into North Europe, the cold blob also creates an area of high air pressure, causing the jet stream to bypass it and change its configuration, which directly affects the weather in Europe.
Yesterday, I was quite puzzled by the placement, shape, and temperature of the cold blob, as it was definitely out of shape and out of place (the lower picture). Suddenly, it appeared near the US East Coast instead of its usual position southward to Greenland. Today, it is closer to its more traditional place, with a much smaller temperature gradient.
This means that #ColdBlob is much less stable and deserves much more attention. This means it is influenced not only by steady Arctic melting and added meltwater, but also by other factors. Just curious what it could be?
Probably, after all, the cold blob is not as mysterious as the propaganda campaign suggests it is.
