KYIV/WARSAW -- Political allies of former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko say that a Kyiv court's adjournment of her trial is an attempt to gain leverage with international partners, RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service reports.
Judge Rodion Kireyev unexpectedly announced in Kyiv on September 12 that Tymoshenko's trial will be postponed until September 27, after agreeing that she needs more time to prepare for the final stage of the trial.

The judge presiding over the trial of ex-PM Tymoshenko in Ukraine has paused it for two weeks after a joint letter to Kiev from EU foreign relations chief Ashton and her US counterpart Clinton. The letter complained about politically motivated trials and backsliding on democratic standards, Reuters says.

AS European foreign ministers get ready for their Gymnich meeting on Friday and Saturday, it would be nice to think that Ukraine's increasingly casual attitude to the rule of law would be on the agenda. In early August a bunch of senior Americans dealing with Europe wrote to the leaders of the EU (Herman Van Rompuy, José Manuel Barroso, Catherine Ashton and Radosław Sikorski) asking them to suspend Ukraine's EU talks following the arrest of Yulia Tymoshenko.
It was a private letter, not an open one, but got no reply.

Mrs Tymoshenko's trial has polarised public opinion in Ukraine

 

Thousands of people have protested in Kiev against the trial and detention of Ukraine's former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

The march took place on the 20th anniversary of Ukraine's independence, overshadowing official celebrations.
The demonstrations were dispersed after a stand-off with police in riot gear.
Mrs Tymoshenko is charged with abuse of office. Her supporters see the trial as a political prosecution designed to stop her running in future elections.
Some Western governments, including the United States, have also expressed concern that the case against Mrs Tymoshenko is politically motivated.

President Viktor Yanukovych's government will face negative political, diplomatic, and economic effects from the Aug. 5 arrest of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and the accompanying legal proceedings. Tymoshenko was detained on contempt of court charges during her trial for overstepping her authority as prime minister in concluding the 2009 gas import agreement with her Russian counterparts, and for pressing the local gas company Naftohaz Ukrainy to sign the contract. She could face up to ten years in prison if convicted.

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - European officials have condemned the detention of Ukraine's former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko - a move set to complicate EU-Ukrainian relations ahead of a key summit in December.
The Kiev court ordered the 50-year old Tymoshenko to be put behind bars for the rest of the trial after she "systematically" flouted rules by refusing to stand up and by calling witnesses names.

The trial of former Ukrainian Prime Minister and onetime Orange Revolution folk hero Yulia Tymoshenko took a dramatic turn today when she was taken into custody for contempt of court. Her crime? Tweeting the witness:

According to the court decision, the reason for the arrest was "systematic violations by the accused, including impeding the questioning of witnesses."
Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov and Energy Minister Yuriy Boiko earlier made unexpected appearances as witnesses to back the prosecution's case at the trial.

Ukraine's former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, on trial over the 2009 gas deal with Russia, demanded during a court session on Friday that testimony given by the country's current premier, Mykola Azarov, in Russian be translated into Ukrainian.

"I understood nothing from what Azarov said, not even a word," Tymoshenko, a native speaker of Russian, told the court. "I don't understand Russian."

Янукович победил. Начал формировать вертикаль власти. Процесс прошел на удивление легко и без особых сопротивлений как внутри страны, так и без особой критики вне ее. И началась эйфория. Казалось, что весь мир в кармане и можно делать практически все что хочется.

The conflict in Transnistria has been frozen for nearly 20 years at this point, plenty of time for the stand-off to establish very deep roots. This offers both benefits and drawbacks to any resolution of the problem. On one hand, the conflicting sides no longer feel the extreme hostility that had to be overcome in the early 1990s. With the emotional tension declining, the ground is set for communicating and resolving both current issues between the two sides in the conflict and strategic issues that will resolve the problem altogether.

Relations between Ukraine and Russia have been remarkably cold since Viktor Yanukovych was elected president a year ago. It has been a long time since we saw the friendly hugs of Yanukovych and President Dmitry Medvedev.

Ever since pundits first started labeling Yanukovych as the “pro-Russian president,” it sparked the opposite reaction. “Ukraine is not going to be a province of Russia” has become almost a catchphrase for the Ukrainian authorities.

Ukraine will not sacrifice its European integration for a closer friendship with Russia on the Kremlin’s terms.
